Do You Need an Emergency Fire Blanket in Your Prepper Gear?

Yes. An emergency fire blanket is an important tool to have in your home, car, and campsite in the case of a fire.

I promise it’s less intimidating than it sounds. It’s just a large piece of fabric that is designed to extinguish a fire quickly. The fire blanket can be placed over any open flame and the fabric will quickly smother the flames and put out the fire.

And around here, you know the rules: we aren’t paranoid, we’re just PREPARED!

Being prepared for site safety is an essential part of life, so don’t skip the suggestion to grab yourself a fire blanket and throw it into your emergency pack today.

EMERGENCY FIRE BLANKET USE

These are best used for Class F fires. Class F fires are the fires that burn flammable liquids, like oils in the kitchen. We don’t use water to put out Class F fires, because water can cause the flame to spread instead of dissipate. Instead, we need something that can effectively smother the fire without making matters worse.

Enter, the emergency fire blanket.

THE MATERIAL

These blankets are usually made up of fiberglass or Kevlar material that is designed to starve the fire’s oxygen supply and extinguish it without additional damage or exposure to the chemicals found in a fire extinguisher.

WHERE TO USE THEM

They aren’t just for use in the household kitchen either, even though they are great for putting out small grease fires!

Larger fire blankets can be used:

  • in labs
  • factories
  • commercial kitchens
  • on boats
  • at campsites
  • in garages.

Really anywhere that a Class F fire could potentially start or spread.

STOPPING A CLOTHING FIRE

When someone’s clothes catch on fire, having a fire blanket nearby is a great way to quickly and effectively choke out the fire and spare the person from any additional bodily harm.

To stop the fire, make sure you use the fire blanket as instructed.

Cover your own hands to prevent any burns, and then wrap the person in the fire blanket to smother the fire. Immediately have the person lie on the ground and roll around inside the blanket to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible.

PROPER USE OF FIRE BLANKETS

Be sure to follow the instructions of any fire blanket that you purchase. Read the instructions immediately and keep the blanket somewhere that is easily accessible.

We don’t have time to go digging around in the garage when there is an urgent fire spreading. We need to act quickly!

This is why we always recommend having at least TWO fire blankets in your possession. One that is easily accessible inside the house, and another in an emergency kit or in a camp kit.

Most do not expire, but be sure to check the safety tag on your blankets to confirm.

CAN YOU REUSE A FIRE BLANKET?

No.

They can only be used once. After the blanket is used to extinguish a fire, it must be thrown away and replaced with a new one.

Thankfully, they are an affordable tool that we HOPE we’ll never need to use anyway!
